Description
There is always a feeling of contentment when one watches beauty of a painted sunset sky, but when we add the rural green it feels so much more peaceful to me. Haying season in Oregon can go for a full five months. This photo was shot in late July in Douglas County. Big round bales of hay dot this pasture which sits at the bottom of Weaver Mountain. The play of light and shadow adds to a feeling of balance and satiety.

Haying in many parts of North America takes place from June to mid-October.
Hay consists of a variety of grasses from rye to alfalfa. It is an excellent food source for most horses, pigs, cows, sheep and other farm animals.
Haying scenes have inspired artists for centuries. Two well known American artists painted scenes of haying.
William Trost Richards included a solitary figure cutting hay with a scythe in his monumental landscape The Valley of the Brandywine, Chester County (1886-1887).
In 1944, N. C. Wyeth painted a haying scene as a cover illustration for Country Gentleman Magazine. His grandson, Denys, who posed for the child in the painting, remembers standing on a hay-covered model stand in Wyeths studio, with reins in his hands!
