Raven Mandala Shield - mixed media painting by Michele Avanti
I have finally, after more than 12 years, begun to design a tarot deck. I have taught tarot for nearly 30 years and many who have seen my art have asked me to create a deck. Yesterday I began the journey, which I expect will take about two years to create 78 cards.
The way I create most of my art is a complicated process which includes many layers and files, often starting with a sketch or photograph and then scanned into the computer for digital work. This image of two ravens on a shield or in a wheel is a tiny part of the ace of swords that I am working on. This is the ball at the top of hilt of the sword. The cards will be only 2.75 x 4.75" in size so you will need a magnifying glass to see the design. But that is how I work. To complete just one card there will be many paintings that can stand alone like this one.
This painting is designed to display at 24"x24", but in its actual form on the card it will not be more than 1/4 of an inch.
I hope you enjoy it. I love Raven and have chosen him to be the symbol for the element of air which is swords in the tarot.

And so Michele, another day of tribute and I am indulging in my love of “Olde Celtic roots”...( yes, I was the nerd who studied Chaucer, Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, the Shewings of Lady Julian, Milton, Shakespeare etc ...in olde English text...sigh!)....and WHERE to my wandering Eyes DO I LAND?? ...but in your CELTIC ART COLLECTION!..ohhh...such INTRICATE DESIGN and ENCHANTMENT lives here. I LOVE both ART and backstory!..LF Yes, I this tribute gaze is taking ME deeper into why I FEEL such an affinity for your work...I too work in the diminutive INTRICACIES OF quantum beauty which paradoxically explodes my experiential aesthetic into the Cosmic ...returning..into intricate detail...and so goes the eternal ...meditative...feed of my life

I am glad you are also sharing them in this form. The artwork is too beautiful to limit it to a small product. I appreciate your skill and devotion to your art.
