Description
Washington Monument - Inauguration Day 2021 - acrylic painting - Michele Avanti
The challenging year of 2020 had already ended but the pandemic raged on, and though the election was over in November, the president did not want to leave office. After losing 61 lawsuits in an attempt to change the election results,, on January 6th, he sent a mob to the Capitol. These Americans were stirred up to believe the election had been stolen. They marched down Pennsylvania Avenue. Once at the Capitol, about 300 or so of the group forced their way into the building, climbing walls, breaking doors and windows and destroying property. Five people died in the assault. They were led to believe if they forced the Congress to stop the electoral vote certification process, the current president would remain in office. It was a terrifying sight to watch. More terrifying to hear as they shouted, "Hang Pence!"
Despite the horror of the day, the certification continued at 8pm and was completed that night. Two weeks later on January 20, 2021, a new president and vice-president were sworn in, not in the usual celebratory fashion of past presidency, but under military guard and social spacing due to the pandemic. The event did not have the numerous inaugural balls of past years. There were no balls. Instead an amazing virtual gathering which the nation witnessed through televisions, computers and cell phones. As Katy Perry sang her famous song, "Fireworks" the screen filled with fireworks over the Washington Monument. It was a cathartic moment for me. All the horrors of the past weeks flowed through my being. Tears of the pain, tears of relief washed over me and I had to paint the image I saw. So this is the first of several paintings I complete after midnight on January 21st, 2021 to celebrate a new beginning of American democracy and a hope that we as a people, can come together and love each other despite differnces of opinion. I pray we can find a road to work together for the good of all people in our nation and others around our world. I hope you enjoy it.
The original acrylic painting is 18"x24" and is in a black wood transitional frame. Price is $888. Contact me if you would like to own this work and we will figure out how best to ship it to you from my home here in Oregon, USA.
