Timber Gears Built The West photographed in Oregon by Michele Avanti
This rusty old gear is left over from a lumber mill which ran on this site back in the 1800s. The mills in Oregon provided lumber that built many of mining towns across the Western States.

The 1849 California gold rush sent the lumber market into a boom, and sawmills sprang up all over western Oregon. Eighteen water-powered sawmills were operating on the Willamette and lower Columbia in the spring of 1848; three years later Oregon had one hundred sawmills. Even before the mining boom, the export market made a difference in local prices, according to an 1848 newspaper article: Oregon lumber is shipped to California and the Sandwich [Hawaiian] Islands and its value for shipment controls its price at home.
