Of all the fish one may find at the pet store, my favorite have always been the colorful bettas. Their fancy tails fan out and their bodies glisten with silver colors. Fish may seem insignificant to many people, but if you have ever known a betta, they are very intelligent. I had a wonderful betta who would greet me by jumping out of the water when I came home. And though the books said they when his mate laid eggs you should keep him away because he will eat them, that is not what my betta did at all. He carried them on his nose and gently placed them where they would be protected and hatch. Great beings may take any form including fish and insects. When we open our hearts to love, great beings will share time with us and we can learn and grow through their lessons and guidance.

The Siamese fighting fish, also sometimes colloquially known as the betta (Betta splendens), is a species in the gourami family which is popular as an aquarium fish. This species is native to the Mekong basin of Thailand, Laos,Cambodia, and Vietnam, where it can be found in standing waters of canals, rice paddies, and floodplains.[2] They are called pla-kad (biting fish) in Thai or trey krem in Khmer. They tend to be rather aggressive. In January 2014 a large population of the fish was discovered in the Adelaide River Floodplain in the Northern Territory, Australia.[3] As an invasive species they pose a threat to native fish, frogs and other wildlife in the wetlands.

B. splendens usually grows to a length of about 6.5 cm (2.6 in).[2] Although aquarium specimens are known for their brilliant colors and large, flowing fins, the natural coloration of B. splendens is a dull green, browns, and gray, and the fins of wild specimens are relatively short.
